Other Traditional Squares
The traditional square dance is a unique American social event that features live music, called squares and other traditional dances like flatfooting, waltzes and two-steps.
Once the major social event for rural communities throughout the nation, square dances have mostly been displaced by the spread of popular culture, Western Square Dancing, other kinds of social dances like Contra Dancing and ballroom dance.
Several traditional square dances continue to survive. Many of them are in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, Southwest Virginia and North Carolina.
