About the New River Old Time Community
What is it we do? Basically, the New River Old Time community is a group of people that love to get together and have a great time. The primary force that bonds us together is the love of Old Time music and dance, the cultural and artistic heritage of the Appalachian mountains, and the down-home, anyone's-welcome atmosphere that exists wherever enthusiasts and stewards of this culture and music go.
On a more abstract level, and undoubtedly an unconscious level as well in many aspects, this community represents a return to Principles, Activities, and Ways that have fallen to the wayside in our modern culture as new technology, new media, urbanization, and the Big Corporation convincingly offer entertainment, consumption, and spectatorship as basis of individual fulfillment. Not everyone is convinced however. As Frost says, "the way to go is the same we came." The absence of what were formerly staple ingredients in the cohesion of rural America -- community involvement, creative expression, connection to the land, and a intimate network of relationships -- has left a void in soul of modern life. The New River Old Time community doesn't itself profess to fill this void per se. But it provides a rallying point for individuals who share many similar values and recognize the importance of and beauty in the OldTime music and dance tradition. This rallying point takes the form of weekly, often wild, public get-togethers, known as the Tuesday Night Old Time Jam.
